Lampeter Apple Day

Fruitful & Seasonal Celebration

On Saturday 8th October the third Lampeter Apple Day will take pride of place at  Organic Fresh Foods, Tregaron Road, Lampeter. The day will run from 11 till 3 and everyone is welcome to join in with the apple themed activities and fun.

As the recession continues to hit hard, what can be more satisfying and sustainable than picking fruit in our back gardens or local hedgerows. In times gone by each farm would have a couple of apple trees, close to the house, for fruit and drink. Many of those trees still exist, producing free fruit year after year. But not all apples will last into the winter so juicing is a great way to preserve free produce.

If you want to come along just bring any of your spare fruit, spare containers and spare energy. Lampeter Permaculture Group will provide all the equipment to help you chop, scrat and press your fruit. If you don’t have any fruit you can still join in and learn how simple it is to turn what can be seen as a waste product into a delicious healthy drink.

Lampeter Apple Day is not on its own, National Apple Day is an annual celebration, held on October 21 each year, of applesand orchards. Apple Day was initiated by Common Ground in 1990 and now, in its 21st year, is celebrated across the Country with people organising hundreds of local events. And this year’s apple harvest is said to be one of the best on record thanks to the unusually warm spring followed by a cool, wet summer.

Apple Day Coordinator, Tim Martin, said "Last year was really successful with more people then ever, some bringing a carrier bag of apples and some a whole car full! As ever the young people had a great time with the now legendary 'apple scratter' and the array of home made presses - the 'washing machine apple press' drew a lot of interest. "

As well as apple pressing to get involved in, there will be local food producers, apple themed displays, apple tree advice and sales, a pizza oven, refreshments, demonstrations, and games for the children. Whether you come empty handed or with a carboot full of fruit there will be plenty to do on the day.

The Lampeter Permaculture Group is very grateful to The Organic Fresh Food Company for supporting this event
