If the TTIP goes ahead, as is being discreetly negotiated at present, it will make billions for the US global corporations and ruin our society, economy and environment in the process.

Food in Transition

INVITATION: "Food in Transition: co-operative solutions"

Saturday 12th March 2011 - 11am to 4.30pm

Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth

The Co-operative Group have pleasure in inviting you to join in a pioneering event looking at the challenges that food retailing and the supply chain will face in this century and ways in which those challenges can be addressed.

The event will examine the effects that the tightening of the supply of

energy, fertilisers and land, together with an increased demand, will have on both centralised and local distribution systems and look at how resilient systems are likely to be in facing economic and social uncertainties.

Participants will discuss how businesses using different models of food retailing can learn from each other. The conference will offer an opportunity for representatives of the UK’s fifth biggest supermarket chain and thetransition network to look at ways of working co-operatively for a better future.

The format of the day will be of informal sessions hosted by specialist panels focussing on

•        ‘What if’ scenarios, such as the $150 barrel of oil or peak phosphate by mid century

•        Ways of converting crises into opportunities

•        Local initiatives

•        Learning from others

The panel members will give a brief presentation of their views and the topic will be opened up for wider discussion.

Within the limits of the time available for each session we particularly want to encourage informed discussion from a variety of standpoints. If you have a viewpoint that you would like to advocate please let us know in advance so that we can try to accommodate as many contributions as possible.

During the lunch break there will be time for informal discussions and the opportunity to talk to local food producers and sample their wares.

The proceeding will be filmed by a professional unit and time made available for interviews with participants. It is hoped that the edited results will be available in a variety of forms and lengths as an educational resource and as a stimulus for further debate. The Co-operative Membership hope to bring this crucial topic to as wide audience as possible.
